5 Cheapest States for Military Insurance

#1Idaho
$33/mo

Low population density, fewer uninsured drivers, minimal traffic congestion. Good driving conditions year-round in most areas.

#2Maine
$80/mo

Rural state with low accident rates, well-maintained roads, and a small population. NAS Brunswick is the primary installation.

#3New Hampshire
$80/mo

No mandatory insurance requirement (but recommended), low crime rates, and minimal traffic. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is nearby.

#4Vermont
$85/mo

Small, rural state with low accident and theft rates. Limited military presence keeps demand low.

#5Hawaii
$90/mo

Despite no-fault status, Hawaii has low speed limits, short commutes, and a strong military community that benefits from group rates.

5 Most Expensive States for Military Insurance

#1Michigan
$180/mo

Unique no-fault system with unlimited PIP benefits drives up premiums. Detroit has highest urban rates in the country.

#2Florida
$170/mo

No-fault state with high uninsured driver rate (20%+), frequent severe weather claims, and heavy traffic in military-dense areas like Tampa and Jacksonville.

#3Louisiana
$92/mo (with 25% mandatory discount)

Without the mandatory 25% military discount, Louisiana rates average $123/month. High lawsuit rates and severe weather drive costs.

#4New York
$150/mo

No-fault state with high PIP requirements ($50,000). Dense urban areas near Fort Drum and NYC bases push rates up.

#5Kentucky
$150/mo

No-fault state with high PIP costs. Fort Campbell and Fort Knox areas have moderate rates, but state average is high.

Louisiana: Mandatory 25% Military Discount

Louisiana is the only state with a mandatory military discount written into law. Under RS 22:1482, all auto insurers operating in Louisiana must provide a minimum 25% discount to:

  • Active duty military stationed in or residents of Louisiana
  • National Guard members stationed in or residents of Louisiana
  • Reserve members stationed in or residents of Louisiana

This is in addition to any voluntary military discounts the insurer offers. If you are stationed in Louisiana, verify that this mandatory discount is applied to your policy. It is not always applied automatically; you may need to request it and provide military documentation.
