Guard and Reserve members face unique insurance challenges. Part-time military status means some discounts apply only during active orders, and eligibility rules vary by insurer.
| Insurer | Eligibility | During Drill | When Activated | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USAA | Full eligibility | Yes, year-round | Yes | Guard and Reserve members have the same USAA eligibility as active duty. No distinction between drilling and activated status. |
| Geico | Full eligibility | Yes, 15% year-round | Yes, 15% | Geico treats all Guard/Reserve members the same regardless of activation status. One of the easiest to qualify for. |
| Armed Forces Insurance | Full eligibility | Yes, year-round | Yes | AFI was built for military members including Guard/Reserve. Full eligibility for all products and discounts. |
| Progressive | Varies by state | Varies (0-10%) | Up to 10% | Some states offer the full military discount to drilling Guard members, others only during activation. Ask your state-specific Progressive agent. |
| State Farm | Varies by agent | Varies | Up to 10% | Agent-managed. Some agents near Guard armories are familiar with Guard eligibility, others may not apply the discount correctly. |
| Liberty Mutual | Eligible | Up to 10% | Up to 15% | Liberty Mutual offers a higher discount during activation than drilling status. Both are available. |
Regular drill weekends (Inactive Duty Training) and Annual Training. You are a part-time service member living a civilian life most of the month.
Called to active duty under federal or state orders. You are now effectively active duty and all active duty benefits and protections apply.
Guard and Reserve deployments often differ from active duty deployments in important ways that affect insurance. Activations can come with shorter notice, vary more in length, and involve different operational tempo.
Guard/Reserve activations sometimes come with less advance notice than active duty deployments. Some insurers can process storage conversions in 24 hours (USAA, AFI). If you get short-notice orders, call your insurer immediately.
Guard activations may be 30 days, 90 days, or 12+ months. Some insurers have minimum deployment lengths for storage rates (typically 30 days). For shorter activations under 30 days, reduced mileage may be more practical than comprehensive-only storage.
When activated under state orders (Title 32), some but not all SCRA protections apply. Federal activations (Title 10) trigger full SCRA protections. The distinction matters for insurance protections.
Guard/Reserve members may deploy and return multiple times in a year. Set up your insurer for quick conversion between full coverage and storage. USAA and AFI handle this best with their dedicated military support.
Upon retirement or separation from the Guard
Proves Guard service for veteran status verification. The Guard equivalent of the DD-214.
Issued before each drill period
Proves current service for insurers that require verification of drilling status. Some insurers accept annual orders.
When activated for federal or state duty
Required for SCRA protections and deployment storage rates. Provide to insurer as soon as received.
If previously active duty before Guard/Reserve
If you served active duty before joining the Guard/Reserve, your DD-214 from active service also qualifies.
As needed
Some insurers accept a letter from your unit commander confirming your service status as alternative verification.
While serving
Quickest verification method. Accepted by all major insurers. Keep a copy of front and back on file.
Many Guard and Reserve members also hold federal civilian positions (dual-status technicians, AGR, or separate federal employment). This creates a unique insurance advantage at Geico.
Geico is the only major insurer that allows you to stack the military discount (15%) with the federal employee discount (8%). This combination is not available at any other insurer and can result in some of the lowest rates in the market for dual-status members, potentially beating USAA on price.
If you are a dual-status Guard/Reserve member with a federal civilian job, get quotes from both USAA and Geico. The Geico stacking may result in a lower premium despite Geico's higher base rates.
Louisiana's mandatory 25% military discount (RS 22:1482) explicitly includes National Guard members stationed in or residents of Louisiana. This applies regardless of activation status. All insurers operating in Louisiana must offer this discount to Guard members.
Texas law requires insurers to offer military discounts to Guard members, though the percentage is not mandated. Texas has the largest Guard population in the country, so insurers with Texas presence generally have strong Guard-specific programs.
Virginia prohibits insurance cancellation for deployed Guard members and requires reinstatement at pre-deployment rates. Virginia's proximity to the Pentagon means many insurers in the state have robust military programs.
Check with your state insurance commissioner for Guard-specific insurance regulations. See our state-by-state rates page for detailed state information.
